Reporting suspected bed bugs

October 28, 2019

VCU immediately addresses situations where bed bugs are suspected. VCU works with an external vendor to inspect bed bug reports within 24 hours. Treatment is scheduled within 24 hours of any positive findings.

In response to reports of suspected bed bugs, VCU conducted a visual and canine inspection of the Academic Learning Commons and no evidence of bed bugs was found.

A report of a single bed bug was found in Cabell Library. Though a visual inspection of the facility found no further evidence of bed bugs, the reported study room, as well as adjacent study rooms and furniture, will close and be chemically treated this weekend.

If someone suspects bed bugs in a room or area, they should report it through VCU Facilities Self Service or by calling VCU Facilities Management Customer Service at 828-9444.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, bed bugs can be found almost anywhere, but tend to live within eight feet of where people sleep. They hide during the day in seams, cracks and crevices. Bed bugs are not considered dangerous or pose a serious medical threat, though bites may affect people differently.
