What trades are offered through the Apprenticeship Program?
The selected trades for the Apprenticeship Program are identified based on the business needs of Facilities Management. Apprenticeships will be offered in the following trades:

  • Electricians
  • HVAC Technicians
  • Locksmiths
  • Plumbers
  • Steamfitters

What are the application requirements?
Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate by January 2019, and meet the minimum requirements for their chosen trade.

What formal education is required to be considered for the Apprenticeship Program?
Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate before January 2019, when they begin their employment with VCU and meet the minimum requirements for their chosen trade. Even though education beyond high school is not required, we do consider all of those factors due to the competitive aspect of these positions. If an applicant has completed any technical trades classes, those should also be included in the online application.

What previous trades experience is required to be considered for the Apprenticeship Program?
There is no formal experience required, however it is recommended that applicants include all trade experience to be considered for employment because of the competitive recruitment process.

When is recruitment for the Apprenticeship Program?
Applications for the Apprenticeship Program will be accepted online beginning the end of October 2018 on the VCU Human Resources eJobs website.

When will interviews be scheduled for potential candidates?
Interviews will begin in November and conclude in December. Selected candidates will begin employment at VCU in January 2019.

What is the average salary for an apprentice?
Apprentices begin with an approximate salary of $29,120 plus a full-time benefits package. Facilities Management will pay for their related classroom instruction and required textbooks. Each year apprentices successfully complete classes, progress in learning more towards their trade, and complete other requirements, apprentices will be eligible to receive a salary increase acknowledging advancement through the Apprenticeship Program. By the time an apprentice graduates from the program at the end of four years, they will be earning a salary in line with other journey level employees.

What to expect if selected as an apprentice?
Apprentices will begin their employment at VCU at the beginning of January 2019. Classroom instruction will begin in August and September 2019.

What classroom instruction is required?
Apprentices are required to complete over 400 hours of related classroom instruction. This will provide apprentices with the foundation and knowledge needed as they learn their specific trade. Our apprentices will attend classes through the Richmond Technical Center, Chesterfield County Public Schools Adult Education, and Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Typically, an apprentice is scheduled for one to two classes per semester, depending on the institution’s requirements. Generally an apprentice has to complete eight classes during the four year apprenticeship. All apprentices are required to attend their classes regularly, complete assignments, and pass the class with a minimum grade of a C. Apprentices are subject to the rules and policies of the institution they attend.

What on-the-job training is required?
Apprentices are required to complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training as designated by Department of Labor and Industry with licensed journeymen, mentors and supervisors at Virginia Commonwealth University.

How is an apprentice evaluated?
Each apprentice will be evaluated through assessment of their work and classroom reports. The Apprenticeship Program Standards govern all matters related to the program and the apprentice’s participation in the program.
