The Steam Plant unit operates and maintains two University central boiler heating plants and an extensive distribution piping network. E&U staff monitor the expenses of the heating plants (an auxiliary enterprise supporting the VCU Medical Center and many State office buildings) and establish the steam rate necessary to support all plant operations, maintenance, repair and replacement for long term reliability. The main steam plant is operated 24x7x365 and staffed accordingly.
VCU Engineering staff support Planning, Design, Construction and Zones with engineering services, drawing reviews, submittal approvals, specifications, and bids for engineered projects. E&U engineers offer advice and recommend short-term and long-term building systems strategies to support VCU's strategic priorities. E&U staff hold seats on the Design/Construction standards committee.
E&U staff purchases natural gas for the steam plants and manages the balance of the University’s purchased utilities (electricity, natural gas, water, sewage, fuel oil). The unit sponsors and oversees a variety of campus initiatives to improve energy conservation and reduce costs associated with energy usage.
E&U staff support operation and maintenance of building controls for HVAC, research equipment and fire alarm systems. E&U staff also monitor building performance data via networked electronic control systems.
E&U staff support operation and maintenance of all campus elevators, lifts, and vertical transportation.
