Utilities and Energy

The Utilities Department is responsible for managing and maintaining all university boilers/heating plants. As part of this effort, Utilities monitors the expenses of the heating plant (an auxiliary enterprise supporting the VCU Medical Center and many state office buildings), and establishes the steam rate necessary to support all plant operations, maintenance, repair and replacement.

Utilities manages university energy usage, performs HVAC and fire alarm controls troubleshooting/repair services, maintains major HVAC and electrical equipment through the central mechanical/electrical group and oversees the Customer Service/Operations Center function of the Physical Plant Department.

Energy Management

VCU Energy Management purchases and manages all of the university‚Äôs utilities, including electricity, natural gas, water, sewage and fuel oil. Steam is generated on site in central power plants and distributed to connected buildings on each campus. The department oversees a variety of campus initiatives to improve energy conservation and reduce costs associated with energy usage.
