VCU Facilities Management's Apprenticeship Program, gives individuals that are interested in an opportunity for a career as a skilled tradesman through structured on-the-job training, technical education, and related classroom instruction, through a four-year program.
In addition to the other components, apprentices will learn and gain knowledge of various codes, safety rules, regulations and procedures, appropriate use of tools, reading and interpreting documentation, troubleshooting, teamwork, and communication skills.
The selected trades for the Apprenticeship Program are identified based on the business needs of Facilities Management. Apprenticeships will be offered in the following trades:
Apprentices will be hired as a full-time university and academic professional employee with salary and benefits. Our apprentices will work hand in hand with licensed journeymen, their mentors, supervisors, and other key employees, to ensure they receive the skills and knowledge to become highly qualified in their chosen trade.
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for the chosen trade they are interested in, having a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and be at least 18 years of age by the time they begin employment as an Apprentice.
Advertisement and recruitment for the Apprenticeship Program will begin at the end of October 2018. Position for the Apprenticeship Program will be advertised for two weeks. Interviews will conclude in December 2018. New apprentices will begin work in January 2019, and related classroom instruction will begin in August and September 2019.
